DASL IS LOOKING FOR A TREASURER TO JOIN ITS BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
As a Trustee you would need to:-
- Work with your fellow trustees to take full responsibility for the overall management, future strategy and financial viability of DASL, delegating this on a day-to-day level to the Director and staff.
- Have an understanding of the financing of voluntary organisations.
- Be able to attend bi-monthly and other occasional meetings.
All trustees are responsible collectively but as a Treasurer, we would ask that:
- You keep all the trustees properly informed about the state of the organisation’s finances.
- Ensure financial reports to trustees are properly discussed and comprehensible to everyone.
- Ensure financial reports to outside bodies are provided in the proper form and at the proper time.
- Ensure auditors are appointed and report on DASL accounts at the annual AGM.
The Executive Committee is the governing body of DASL and has the ultimate legal responsibility for the organisation. DASL is a registered charity and a limited company.
What is the role of the Board of Trustees?
- To give direction to the organisation: a strategic role identifying and reviewing the direction and mission of DASL, making overall plans and monitoring progress.
- Managing people: to harness the efforts of staff to the best effect.
- Accountability: to account for the activities to any body, group or individual with an interest in the organisation.
- Legal: to ensure the organisation abides by its governing instruments and obeys the law.
- Resource Management: to ensure that money and property are wholly used to pursue the aims and objectives of the organisation and are managed to best effect.
- Managing itself: making sure that the Committee makes good decisions, functions well, that meetings are effective and that all members are fully involved.
The Executive Committee meets very two months in the evening from 6.00 p.m. for about two hours at Capital House in Stratford. Travelling costs can be reimbursed. There are occasional meetings outside of this time, an AGM annually and one trustee training day a year.
What sort of people become Trustees?
We are looking for people from a wide range of backgrounds, who are interested in our work - people from, for example, health and social care professions, from schools, commerce, finance, community or voluntary groups, indeed people who understand some of the issues which concern East London. In particular, we would like to recruit a Treasurer from an accounting background - perhaps someone who currently if working as a Finance Director/manager of another voluntary organisation and would enjoy the opportunity to broaden their experience in another charity. Training and information is provided and you can come along an observer to one of the meetings before making a decision to put your name forward.
If you would like to know more….
Then please contact Sue Kenten or Fiona MacCarthy on 020 8257 3068 or suekenten@dasl.org.uk.

If so, would you be interested in becoming a volunteer for DASL helping our clients plan, maintain and grow their own fruit and vegetables in our urban garden at DASL on the Romford Road. If you were to volunteer for us then we would provide you with an outline and be clear about what’s needed; opportunities for training; support from our staff and we would reimburse some expenses e.g. travel. We want a regular commitment of say 2-3 hours each week. We are not looking for years of experience or any particular qualifications, we are looking for someone who has an empathy with our client group and a passion for gardening which they can use to inspire and engage our clients.
