Peer
Education Project
DASL provides Peer Education Programmes as one aspect of its
work with young people.
In Newham we currently have a programme operating in various
schools whereby selected pupils are trained to become “peer
educators”.
Children learn a lot from one another as part of their everyday
lives and peer groups play an influential role in helping people
understand themselves and others. Often young people can more
openly discuss and explore issues with young people of their own
background, rather than adults or teachers. The “peer educators”
can become effective role models as they themselves experience
increasing levels of self-confidence, involvement and feelings
of self-worth.
There are strong links between the early misuse of alcohol/drugs
and the development of significant long term problems in later
years and between substance misuse and youth offending. Alcohol’s
link to aggression and violent crime is also noted. So, starting
prevention work at an early age, helping children to make informed
choices and equipping them with the skills and knowledge to follow
these through give them the best chance of avoiding problems as
adults.

In Tower Hamlets DASLhas a team of enthusiastic young people
fully trained and accredited (LOCN) to deliver alcohol, substance
misuse and sexual health education to other young people.
The 'peer education project' can offer you some friendly, down
to earth and interactive education on health issues in a way that
makes young people sit up and listen.
The project can offer your school, venue or community / youth
group workshops on self esteem, relationships, conflict resolution,
sexual health, substance misuse and alcohol, or any mix/part of
these, tailor made to suit your requirements.
